Academy Trainer Requirements
Following are requirements needed to become a Local Corrections Officer Academy Trainer:
  1. High School Diploma or Equivalency
  2. The candidate must have been employed for the equivalent of two (2) years in a position directly involved with the custody, care, and control of one of the following groups:
    1. Incarcerated felons or misdemeanants.
    2. Pretrial detainees.
    3. Probationary felons or misdemeanants.
    4. Paroled felons.
    5. Incarcerated juvenile offenders.

    Time spent as a student intern or simply employment by a corrections agency shall not be considered relevant work experience in and of itself.
  3. Written recommendation from the Sheriff or his/her designated representative.
  4. Successful completion of a MSCTC approved training program for trainers. These include but are not limited to the 40 Hour NIC Train-the Trainer Program and the NIC 32 Hour Foundation Skills Program. Specialty training modules such as Defensive Tactics and Fire Safety may require special trainer certification (see below).
  5. Satisfactory completion of the Local Corrections Officer Training Program is preferred.
  6. A request to consider other employment experience and trainer certifications in lieu of the above requirements may be submitted in writing to the MSCTC. Requests of this type will be considered on an individual basis.

Additional Module Specific Requirements
Booking and Intake

An individual providing Council sanctioned training in the discipline of Booking and Intake shall have experience in that discipline within a county jail setting in order to be qualified to teach the curriculum. Determination of current and practical experience is within the sole discretion of the Council.

Custody and Security

An individual providing Council sanctioned training in the discipline of Custody and Security shall have experience in that discipline within a county jail setting in order to be qualified to teach the curriculum. Determination of current and practical experience is within the sole discretion of the Council.

Defensive Tactics

Requires current trainer certification issued by the vendor chosen for this module.

Fire Safety

Requires satisfactory completion of a MSCTC approved fire safety train-the-trainer class or equivalent specialized training.
